Just one thing... (07.15.22)

Maybe this is how the author thought Medium should be run. Easy for us all to judge from the outside.

The one thing...

Ev Williams is stepping aside as Medium's CEO.

What's being said...

The challenge for Stubblebine is the same as it was for Williams: after ten long years, there is very little that Medium hasn’t already tried. It was always grandiose to suggest that a humble blogging platform could fix the internet. Now Williams has kicked himself upstairs, and it will be up to someone else to try to fix his company.

Go further...

This is a lazy ending to an otherwise good story.

"fix his company"

  • The company has $35m in annual revenues?
  • Without knowing the profit and loss, this seems a good business?
  • Fixing the culture seems a better fit?

"very little that Medium hasn't tried"

  • Huh?
  • How is that a negative in a changing news and media world?
  • Was Substack even around when Medium started?

"grandiose"

  • Grandiose to whom?
  • Grandiose compared with what?
  • Someone else?

Maybe this is how the author thought Medium should be run. Easy for us all to judge from the outside.
