MLS MatchDay iPad App - Second Look

Earlier this week, the Galaxy beat the Sounders in the opening game of the 2011 MLS season. I followed along on the MLS MatchDay app for the iPad and the app made for a good experience. I hadn’t purchased the season pass yet as I wanted to see how much access was provided for free.
The video clips were crisp and the updates seemed timely. Nice work there.

After the game, I figured I’m in. I start looking at reviews and making sure I will be able to catch most of the NY Red Bull games, understanding blackouts, etc. I come across this gem:

Oof. I’m not sure what to think of that. The way it’s laid out, I don’t know how many games would actually be available to me. Plus, there is currently no TV deal in place for the Red Bull games, so how does that affect my ability to watch any of the games I actually want to see?

As an aside, wouldn’t that be a nice tool to show your fans? “According to your IP address, here is what you would be able to see when you purchase this package.”

The thing is, we don’t subscribe to cable, so even if the games were televised, I wouldn’t be able to see them. How does that make any sense? Who is making any money here?

As nice as the app is, I think I’ll wait.
